31 Exercises You Can Do at Home

Many people don't have time to consistently go to the gym and want to workout at home. But how many exercises can you do in your workouts at home with dumbbells? I have put together some training options you can do at home. The options include dumbbell workouts and exercises that need no external resistance. I have provided many options so that even a home workout can have variety.

(DB = dumbbell)

Leg Exercises
DB squat
DB lunge
DB step-up (onto bench)
DB split squat

Chest Exercises
DB Flat Chest Press
DB Incline Chest Press
DB Decline Chest Press
DB Flat Chest Fly
DB Incline Chest Fly
DB Decline Chest Fly

Next is a bunch of leg exercises that will not require external resistance. They challenge you for leg strength, endurance, balance, and agility.

Push-up Options
Finally, the push-up is an upper-body exercise that is effective at building upper-body endurance and moderate levels of strength.

Pushups (kneeling for beginners)
Decline Pushups
Elevated Pushup (one hand eleveated 4-6 inches on a riser)
Spiderman Pushups (bring your knee to your elbow as you lower your body to the floor) Close-grip Pushups

Ab Exercises
In our ab training, we try to avoid spinal flexion (i.e. rounding the back in crunches). So we stick with...

Plank
Side Plank
Bird Dog
(these three are the most basic exercises to start with, and are great for people that need to improve abdominal endurance)

Then into more advanced ab exercises that still avoid spinal flexion:
Spiderman Climber
Mountain Climber

Whew, that's it, and should keep you busy with your workouts at home.

Which Diet Will Work For You?

How many more diets will you have to go on to lose weight? How much more money will you spend on weight-loss solutions and how much more willpower will you be able to muster up to lose those extra kilos?

Most diets suggest that excess weight is a problem that can be solved through dieting. Through my experience, however, this could not be further from the truth. Is it possible that it is not about willpower at all? How would you feel if I suggested that weight is not the problem, but rather it is your thinking, your self-image and your self-esteem that have caused your distorted thinking about food, your body or your life?

I know that inside of you is a naturally slim person that existed before your thinking became distorted by the media, social pressures, family problems, neuroses, unforeseen disasters and the natural ups and downs of life.

So what is the solution?

Reach the thin mind inside of you despite what the outward appearances suggests and start from there.

Start living from inside of yourself.

In summary - get to what the REAL issue is and be willing to address your issues and be willing enough to want to change.

This perspective is different from the dieting concept mainly in that it treats the causes of overeating. By understanding the reasons for your overeating or under-eating, you can begin to address what it is that is really disempowering you.

This will require:
A Decision
Honesty
Courage
Willingness
Effort
Discipline

Some feel it may be too much to handle, so they continue along the dieter's path. This is a form of procrastination used to avoid the truth. It may not be the right time in your life right now to face your weight and your life, but I ask you:

When is the right time?
How far along the dieter's do you have to go, to reach rock bottom?
When is enough more than enough for you?
How much longer can you stand yourself as you are now?
How many more weeks, months and years do you have to go on pretending to yourself, family and friends that you are okay?

Permanent weight loss can be yours if you are willing to at least entertain some simple yet very effective tools, strategies and perspectives. These are all available at your fingertips if you want it. Are you willing to give your permanent weight loss attempts at least one more try?

Information Overload! (Oversized Fitness Ebooks)

Developing a good knowledge base of how to improve your health and fitness is a very good thing to do. And if you get experienced enough, maybe you can use your knowledge to help other people increase their health and fitness levels. Learning how to exercise properly and stay fit will improve the way you live and will most likely reflect on those who are close to you. But here is one thing you must avoid when learning new things.

Information Overload!

Im particularly referring to downloadable ebooks that you download onto your hardrive. Fitness ebooks are the best way for anybody to quickly increase their knowledge base of health and fitness. The only negative to this type of learning is information overload.

Its when you download a huge 200-something page ebook that promises to get you in shape with the information thats inside of it. Oh sure, the information is probably well-written content that you could definitely use and apply. The only problem is: huge ebooks like this tell you so much stuff that you fill your mind with so many exercise and training methods; so much information that you start to forget what you first learned and the more information you receive, the more information you lose. And pretty soon your brain gets fried and you cant even recall most of what you learned.

Thats information overload at its worst.

The Solution:

Stick to the small, 15-20 page fitness ebooks that tell you exactly what you want to know. Be specific when youre shopping online for a fitness ebook. What area do you want to increase the most? Your stamina? Your strength? Your flexibility?

This makes finding the right fitness ebook for you easier and more efficient. And it will most likely cost less because since the fitness ebook that youll purchase will be more targeted to your specific needs, the length of the ebook will be a lot shorter.

Shop smart and train smart .

Spot Reducing In Weight Loss Is A Myth

How many fad diets do you have to waste your hard earned cash on before you realize that spot reduction in weight loss is nothing more than a myth. This myth was developed by the diet industry to take money out of your pocket and waste it on a product that will not deliver any results in your weight loss quest? Yes!! You have been lied to!!

If you are only interested in losing a quick twenty pounds off your butt then I suggest you stop reading here because there really is no way to spot reduce. If you want to lose weight in a specific area you need to melt away the body fat in the way an unlit candle melts in the hot sun. If you want to really be serious about your weight loss then read on because the following information is extremely relevant.

To understand why you can not spot reduce let us look at some basic human anatomy. Let us look at how your muscle and your fat develops around your stomach area. If you have spent the last few years wondering where you placed that six pack your abdomen used to have fear not because it is still there. It is under the fat, it is just hiding from sight. In order to see those muscles you need to eliminate the fat deposits that are masking them. The only way to show off those muscles again would be to not only exercise them but eliminate the fat that is hiding them. You could do crunches from dawn till dark and you still will not be able to "spot reduce" your abdomen. It just simply does not work that way. If you want to spot reduce you are wasting your time and more than likely your money.

If your desire is to lose weight because you are unhappy with your butt or your belly or your whatever... that is great! You just need to realize that you have to tune up the entire body package and not focus on one area. The best way to do this is by eating a better diet and performing some form of exercise that will allow you to burn more calories than you consume in the course of the day. Only after you get your diet under control and your attention is focused on exercise will you be able to start targeting a specific area. The muscles you desire to spotlight can only then can be developed for public display after you have lost the weight that hides them from sight.

If you want to lose weight that is great, I wish you the best. I hope you can do it and do it well. My sincere desire is that you save your money and skip the fad diet and the miracle pills. There is no modern miracle pill that will melt away the pounds. If your desire is to lose weight then plan on doing it the only way possible. That way is to eat right and burn more calories. If you want to spend some money on weight loss solutions then get a treadmill or a weight set or just a good pair of walking shoes and then use them.

Weight loss miracle? No, it will be more like a weight loss journey. That journey can begin right here and right now! It is all up to the choices you make and those choices soon become your past and your past is what you must live with, when it comes to weight loss that is!

Fat Loss 4 Idiots - Avoid the Scam!

By now, you must have heard about the latest online diet called Fat Loss 4 Idiots. It's a very popular way to loose weight because you don't have to go to meetings, eat diet foods or take pills. Plus you can follow this guaranteed weight loss program right in the comfort and privacy of your home. The only person that will ever know that you're on a diet is you! And for some people, that can make or break their weight loss success.

I signed up for Fat loss 4 Idiots last year. I did loose 8 pounds in 11 days, but after that, I dropped the ball and couldn't make the commitment to keep on going. As part of my New Years Resolutions, I have started the diet again, and I fully expect to achieve the same results and more. I have promised to follow the 11 day plan over and over again until I hit my target weight.

So, the question is, is Fat Loss 4 Idiots a Scam? In my experience with the diet, the answer is definitely not! However, I have seen lots of buzz lately around the Internet with people attempting to share their menus from the Diet Generator with others who are not members. Of course this is obviously not fair to those of us that have paid to become members, but more importantly you are doing more damage than good to the person receiving the information. And Here are two Crucial Reasons Why...

First, The Fat Loss 4 Idiots way of eating is very personalized. It is totally tailor made to the individual. When someone signs up and initializes the Diet Generator for the first time They get to pick their favorite foods. This alone is essential for winning the dieting game. If a member gives their personalized 11 day Menu to someone else, then he or she might not like the foods that are on it. The probability of them sticking to the plan or enjoying the diet then becomes slim to none.

Second, don't let the user friendly Diet Generator fool you. It is a very sophisticated piece of software. If you have gone more than 1 round with the Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet, then you will have noticed that even if you pick the same foods, your 11 day menu combinations are totally different. That is because the Fat Loss 4 Idiots Online Diet Generator uses food to stimulate the right hormones in your body to produce optimum weight loss. Therefore, the software must keep track of what combinations members have already eaten to assure the guaranteed results. That's why a New 11 Day Menu is generated every time.

The customer only pays once to sign up for the diet, but they can use the Online Generator as many times as they wish, until the weight loss goals are met. Do you see how someone could get sabotaged during their dieting plight if they were given the wrong information, the wrong combination of foods and the wrong sequence of meals? Members that do this are also jeopardizing the integrity of this incredible diet.

In the end, the Idiots Diet most definitely works, but the possibility of a Fat Loss 4 Idiots Scam does exist, so make sure that the information you get is directly from the website or customer service.

Find why diets don't work Fat Loss 4 Idiots Really Works Forget the Hype, you will get the truth here.

Personal Trainer: No Experience Necessary

I have read many articles like " Before you hire a personal trainer read this " then the article goes on to give you different things to look for, and the #1 is certification, well what everyone should know, is that anyone who can read a book and retain information can become a certified personal trainer.

If you are fat you can become a trainer, if you smoke you can become a trainer, if you are a boozer you can become a trainer.

So even though the a person has no previous experience- they can take an online test and become certified to train you, what I want to know is this who you want training you?

Most people will become the trainers "test subjects" they have no real life experience, they have no idea how to get someone into shape, so does it make more sense to have some one certified or experienced training you ?

Go into almost any gym and you will see some bad trainers, also good trainers, but the bad trainers out number the good trainers.

Personal trainers who don't live what they teach should be ashamed of themselves if they can't take control of their own life, how can they motivate you to better life.

If these trainers want to change peoples lives they should live this way too.

I personally seen people get certified that were fat, even seen one guy who could not even balance himself on one foot, yet they were certified as personal trainers- CRAZY.

Basically what I'm saying is certification isn't always the answer, experience can go along way, if you find the right person.

Ways to Lose Stomach Fat By Eating More - Part 1

Want the best ways to lose stomach fat - Eat more!

Diet and proper nutrition plays an important role in fat loss.

And the cornerstone of any fat loss is a good metabolism.

It is the key ingredient to reducing stomach fat.

But how do you adjust your diet to make sure the foods you eat are as metabolism friendly as possible?

Here are 3 ways to lose stomach fat-

1) Eat healthy to lose stomach fat

A healthy diet needs to be well rounded with the proper amount of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. As well, We need fiber, protein, and good source of fat.

2) Food is Not the Enemy

Not only do we need a balanced diet, a proper meal plan is also required. Instead of eating three meals throughout the day, eat several little meals, say times a day.

You don't have to reduce the number of calories you eat, but just reduce the portions of your meals in half and space them out throughout the day.

Or simply sticking to the policy of only 1 plate portions is a good start.

The benefit of doing this is, it keeps your blood sugar up, which gives you more energy. Initially, this might be difficult for some people, but after a while it will feel natural.

3) If you want a fast metabolism, avoid the 'stuffing' yourself to the point of a belly discomfort. We've all been guilty of over indulging ourselves, especially over Christmas, thanksgiving, and the buffet meals.

Over-eating does not allow your metabolism to handle efficiently, and a lot of it will be stored as fat.

You will gain weight, have less energy, and just make it more difficult to lose the weight.

Stay tuned for Part two on More "Ways to Lose Stomach Fat By Eating More" series coming up soon!

Tummy Fat! Is It Important?

Tummy fat. Some of us have it, others don't. Is there anything special about a big belly compared to a large bottom? Well, surprisingly, not all body fat is created equal! According to a study carried out by researchers from MacMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario it seems that gauging your heart attack risk depends on where your fat is, rather that how much fat you have.

These types of findings are not unique to MacMasters. Dr David Heber, Ph.D., from UCLAs Centre for Human Nutrition reports that distribution of body fat is a more important predictor of heart attack risk than the traditional measurement of Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measurement based on the ratio between your height and weight.

It appears that a more accurate predictor of the impact body fat has on your health, is your overall body shape. You may be more like an apple or a pear, or evenly shaped top and bottom. You may have large thighs, fat hips and a huge bum and have a lower heart attack risk than someone with skinny legs and a big belly.

A more accurate and telling predictor of heart attack risk, is the waist-to-hip ratio.

What is your waist-to-hip ratio?

Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. For example, if your hips measurement is 40 inches and your waist is 34 inches your hip-to-waist ratio is 0.85. If you are a man, that's great, if you are a woman, that's OK (but you are right on the limit of healthy).

- A man's ratio should not be over 0.90

- A woman's ratio should not be over 0.85

Dont fight nature

If you were born an apple you will stay an apple and if you were born a pear you will continue to be appear. Accepting your natural body shape is the first step in losing weight. In a study led by Glasgow, Scotland, psychologist Dorothy Hefferman, Ph.D., researchers concluded that women whose actual body shape differs from their desired one may find losing weight frustrating and have more trouble sticking to a weight-loss program as a result.

If this sounds like you, accept your overall shape as nature intended, but pay attention to reducing fat around your middle and tummy areas. Circumference is much more important to your health than how you look in relation to your bust and bottom.

5 Easy And Fast Weight Loss Tips

Are you looking for weight loss tips that will help you lose weight fast or weight loss tips that will keep the weight off for good? There's a big difference. It's tempting to opt for the former type of tip. Looking for shortcuts and quick results are just a part of human nature. The problem is that you'll be right back to square one when the weight comes back (and it will) when you lose weight quickly. Here are some weight loss tips that will help you do what is necessary to achieve permanent weight loss and look forward to a lifetime of being healthy.

Weight loss tip #1:

Keep a food and exercise journal for one week. Keep track of calories eaten per day and calories burned per day. Don't cheat! Put everything down. Being honest with yourself is a critical step towards weight loss. At the end of the week, you'll have a good idea of your average calories consumed and burned per day. Then, move on to the next one of these weight loss tips and determine what you should be consuming per day.

Weight loss tip #2:

Learn the basic formula for weight loss. Calories in must be less than calories out. We all have a certain amount of calories that for our height, weight, sex, age and activity level that will just maintain our current weight. These calories are spent on the daily requirements for our bodily activities like breathing and digestion as well as our normal task activities, whatever those may be. Figure this amount of calories using a calorie calculator. If you wish to lose weight you must do two things:

1. Lower this calorie intake.
2. Increase the amount of calories burned.

Weight loss tip #3:

A healthy, lasting weight loss occurs over time. One to two pounds per week is the recommendation to achieve this. A pound of fat equals roughly 3500 calories. Therefore, if your goal is to lose one pound per week, you must have a calorie deficit of 500 calories per day. If you are aiming for two pounds per week, then this deficit should be 1000 calories per day. If you determined that your calories per day to maintain your current weight are 2000 calories, then reduce your intake to 1750 per day and burn an additional 250 calories. This could be as simple as eating a half a sandwich for lunch instead of a whole sandwich and going for a brisk two mile walk. If you wish to achieve a two pound per week weight loss, don't lower your calories too drastically.

Weight loss tip #4:

Read food labels. Nobody wants to spend the rest of their lives counting the calories of everything they put in their mouths. In the beginning, understanding portion sizes and caloric amounts is crucial, but after awhile, you'll be able to ball park most of what you eat. You'll probably be surprised in the beginning as well. It hardly seems fair that a portion size of ice cream is a half a cup! As painful as it is, you need to know this so that when you think you're eating 350 calories of non-reduced fat ice cream, you'll understand that filling that cereal bowl with what you used to think was a portion is really more like 1000 calories. One slice of bread is a serving of bread and is usually around 100 calories. I started eating open-faced sandwiches when I figured that one out!

Weight loss tip #5:

Realize that what you are doing now is one of the most important things you could be doing for yourself! Healthy, lasting weight loss is a priceless reward for all your hard work. Patience is the key. Pay no attention to that co-worker that lost ten pounds last week on whatever fad diet she tried! In five to six weeks, I guarantee you, she'll have gained most of that back and you'll be reaping the rewards of your slow, steady weight loss. Not only that, but you'll have built up the tools and knowledge to keep the weight off for good!

Three Steps to Losing Weight and Building Muscle

In today's age of instant gratification people are looking

for the next best diet or workout plan that will give them

the body, and strength, they want in the same time they can

get their favorite Starbuck's coffee. However, when it

comes to losing weight and building strength there aren't

any short cuts.

It takes desire, commitment, and hard work in order to

maintain a consistent weight loss and gain muscle at the

same time. Sure, you can do one or the other, but to do

both takes complete commitment.

But don't let that mean you have to have the expensive gym

membership, costly supplements and diet meals, and hours of

your week consisting of workouts. Of course, we all know by

now that that system is oudated and actually leads to an

unhealthy body. Long workouts and overdieting cause

tremendous amounts of stress on the body where it can

actually have a reverse effect.

Today's scientific studies have revealed that in order to

lose weight you must actually gain strength. Here's how you

can do both with three easy steps.

Work on Strength to Burn Fat

With traditional type exercise and diet programs from the

last two decades you are assured of only one thing. You're

going to lose muscle. You actually get weaker in the

process. But, to have a completely healthy body that loses

weight and builds muscle you must focus on high intensity

strength training in order to give you metabolism a boost.

Be Creative In Your Workouts

A common misconception in workingout is that you need to do

the same exercises to hit the same problem areas. It's just

not true. Actually, the truth of the matter is that more

than a few weeks with a particular "routine" will cause a

stagnation to muscle and strength growht. Why? Because your

muscles have "memory". They remember the stress they've

been put through and can adapt to handle it.

Change your routine from high intensity to low intensity.

Use different exercises and machines. Mix it up with cardio

work, dumbbells, rubber strength bands, yoga, martial arts,

whatever... you get the point. Just be creative.

Three Times A Week Is Enough

The more is better mantra is definitely not something you

want to live by when you want to work out for both weight

loss and muscle gain. Three, one hour workouts are

sufficient for you to see incredible improvements in your

weight, strength, and definition.

Losing weight and building strength can be done at the same

time without having to risk losing muscle or putting on too

many pounds. You don't have to settle for one or the other.

You can do both and have a much healthier body.

When is the Best Time to Workout? I'll Answer

What's the best time of the day to workout?

Very simply, the best time to workout is whatever time you can consistently fit into your schedule.

Ideally, you're not exercising in the morning one day, mid-afternoon the next, and maybe squeezing in an evening workout in a couple days.

It's best to get into a consistent pattern.
I generally encourage clients to try to fit exercise into their morning routine. I can tell you that morning exercisers are simply more successful at sticking with their program for the long term. Morning exercise becomes a lifestyle. Exercising before you head off to work allows you to start the day feeling great. You feel productive and ready to take on the challenges of the day.

You may say, "Doug, I'm not a morning person. I have to be at work at eight o'clock and there's no way that I'm getting up at 5:00 or 6:00 AM to exercise." Every once in a while I'll get this response. Fine. Then get your workout in later on. Maybe over the lunch hour or right after work. But I'll tell you that you will generally run into more issues that make it easy to miss workouts if you try to schedule it later in the day. When the day gets busy and push comes to shove, your evening exercise sessions will likely be disrupted.

Here are some facts that will help you pick the right exercise time for you:

Morning exercise allows you to maximize the benefits of something exercise physiologists call EPOC. EPOC stands for "excess post-exercise oxygen consumption". Research shows that exercise increases your resting metabolic rate to varying degrees. People seem to maximize this effect when exercising in the morning.

Lunchtime or afternoon exercise, if it can be squeezed in, will generally help you avoid the mid-afternoon energy dip which naturally plagues humans due to our circadian rhythms.

The only thing that I can think of that's really beneficial about evening exercise is the social implications. Generally evening exercisers are a more social crowd. Want to meet someone special in the gym, rather than a bar? Evening exercise will maximize your chances.

I should also mention that you probably do not want to workout too late at night. Late-evening exercise may interfere with your ability to sleep for several hours after the workout. Of course, if you feel that you need more energy in the evenings, exercising right after work may be a good option for you. Test it and see what works for you. Everyone is a little different in regards to how exercise affects their ability to sleep.

1440 Minutes - Can You Spare 30 for Your Health?

The problem lies in what these pastimes consist of...

Like most people you are probably exhausted when you get home from work and are looking forward to just crashing on the couch and maybe grabbing a quick snack before dinner. On occasion there's no problem with that, but in general this type of a routine can quickly lead to packing on the pounds and to poor health. After time it also has a cumulative effect where you find yourself in a "rut" and unable or unwilling to break the cycle.

But what if you were to dedicate just a few of those minutes each day to your health?

How about taking just 30 of those 1440 minutes and exercising? After your commitments you would still have an additional 5 or more hours to yourself.

I know... you're tired, you're hungry and you need an energy boost by the time you get out of work and the last thing on your mind is "hitting the gym."

Here's the ironic part about working out. When you first begin to exercise you may be tired and run-down, but by the end of your session you will feel and look reenergized. You will also be less apt to snack on unhealthy foods after your workout since you won't want to jeopardize all the hard work you just put forth. Your mental clarity and mood will have also improved and you will find that you are consciously and subconsciously making more positive and healthy choices in your life.

What you can expect out of a short, intense and efficient 30 -45 minute workout:

  • Increased energy levels
  • Increased muscle tone and definition
  • Improved cardiovascular function
  • Decreased risk factors for many health related diseases
  • Increased productivity throughout the day
  • Improved mood
  • Spiked metabolism to keep you burning fat all day long
  • Better postural alignment
  • Less neck, shoulder, and lower back pain
  • ... and the list goes on and on

So I guess the question is why aren't you spending 30 of those 1440 minutes a day exercising and choosing to improve your health?

You don't need a lot of time and the only motivation you need to muster up is actually getting yourself to your workout destination. Once you're there I guarantee you'll get yourself in motion, and when you do you will begin to feel the transformation take place within your body.

Here's the plan:

Choose a time at least 3 days a week that you are going to dedicate at least 30 minutes of your day to exercising. It can be before, after or on your lunch break, but make it a routine and stick with it.

Start out moderately and don't burn yourself out within the first few weeks like most people anxious to get back into the gym and get healthy do.

Set reasonable goals that you can achieve in those first two weeks. It may just be that you want to make it to the gym 6 times in 2 weeks. That's not unrealistic at all, and then from there you can begin to set more challenging short and long term goals which you plan to achieve with your new workout routine.

Remember, time is not an excuse. Yes, we all use it, but that still doesn't make it right. Find the time, prioritize your schedule and tell yourself you are worth 30 minutes a day.

You owe it to yourself to choose your health because without it everything else suddenly becomes meaningless...

Committed to your success

Interval Training For Accelerated Fat Loss - What It Is, Who Can Do It, And How To Do It

Interval Training, also known as HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is a very popular method to help increase fat loss. In this article Craig reveals what interval training is, who can do it, and how to do it properly for maximal fat loss. In this article my guest and I are going to be talking about something that is very popular right now and that is interval training. What is interval training, how can you do it, and who can do it? Craig, fill us in and give us some answers on those who, what, when, and where's about interval training for fat loss.

Kyle Battis: Hello, this is Kyle Battis and once again I am joined by Craig Ballantyne, fat loss and fitness expert. Craig is going to be talking about something that is very popular right now and that is interval training. What is interval training, how can you do it, and who can do it? Craig, fill us in and give us some answers on those who, what, when, where about interval training.

Craig Ballantyne: That's a good point you make that it's really becoming quite popular these days and I was using it way back in the late '90s when I was just getting involved in the industry and what I was doing was using it with athletes and you don't have to be an athlete to do interval training.

A beginner can do interval training because all interval training means is that you're going to do (blank part of tape) for interval and then you're going to bring the exercise intensity down to lower than normal intensity, recovery intensity for a very short period as well. I like to use this example, a beginner who regularly walks on a treadmill at say 3.5 miles per hour, they would do their interval training at a short, hard interval of maybe 30 to 60 seconds at 3.8 miles per hour and then they'd drop all the way down to 3.0 miles per hour for a minute recovery.

So a minute hard, a minute off and that's interval training for a beginning. It's still safe and it's still going to be effective in increasing more what I call life specific fitness because really anytime we do activity in life, it's generally not a Sunday stroll. We're either climbing stairs or maybe we're walking faster, trying to run and catch the bus, but we're not just going at a slow steady pace most of the time. That's why I say interval training is more leg specific in terms of its fitness benefits.

Also, research shows that interval training does work better than slow cardio for fat loss. For a more advanced interval training session, it can be done on any type of equipment - obviously, beginners can as well - or you can do it outside, you can do hill walking or hill sprinting or running around the track or you can do mountain biking or you have do biking inside on a stationary bike or elliptical. You can do anything you pretty much want here that can be done in short bursts and then recovery.

You do your warm-up, your regular warm-up; you make sure you're really nice and ready to go, especially if you're doing running because running at high speeds can lead to injury. That's why I like actually people do interval training on the bike because you can't fall off it unless you're really uncoordinated and you really aren't going to get hurt because sprinting at high velocities of movement can lead to injury a lot more than just biking against resistance. I like the bike, but you do your warm-up for 5 minutes or so and then you would go into your first interval and I'd like to say exercise at an 8 out of 10 intensity level where a 8 - or a 6 out of 10 would be regular cardio, so you're doing it a couple notches higher than cardio and then go for about a minute and then take anywhere from a minute to a minute and a half down to a very low recovery pace.

That's a big key here is a lot of people with the cardio mentality think they have to keep their heart rate up high and they work too hard in the recovery period, but if you were running on the treadmill at say 7 miles per hour for your work interval, I'd like you to drop down to a 3.0 miles per hour walk or if you're biking and it's Level 10 on a stationary Life Cycle, then take your intensity all the way down to a Level 3 out of 10 for your recovery.

Go very easy, it should be as easy as possible during your recovery period so that you work very hard during the work intervals. That's all we care about. It's not how high your heart rate stays constantly elevated, but that you work hard recover, work hard recover, and then you only need to do about six of those intervals, then do a cool down, stretch any tight muscle groups, and that's it for the interval training. It really should take about half the time of a normal cardio workout and you're going to get more fat-burning results.

Kyle Battis: Yeah, it totally is a life activity. If you look at the way our energy systems work in most life activities even if something like carrying in the groceries from your car, it is more of an interval-type activity than it is a long, slow endurance-type thing. If you look at most of the activities in life, totally it's all interval training, so this actually fits with improving your life in an overall basis, so it's great stuff. Cool, man, well great tips for today. Thank you very much, Craig.

Mustard, Chili, and Weight Loss

It's a surprisingly frequent question, "Is there a relationship between mustard and weight loss? And what about chili peppers, too?"

The benefit of mustard for dieters is very straightforward. A tablespoon (14 g) of mayonnaise--and most of us prefer two tablespoons or more on our sandwiches--contains 99 calories (kcal)and 11 g of fat. Because we go for both the "feel" as well as the taste of mayonnaise, we tend to eat more.

A teaspoon of mustard--which is enough to give a zingy taste to sandwich if you spread it thinly--comes in at just 3 calories and zero grams of fat. Switching from mayo mustard can easily save you 200 calories or more for every sandwich. And chilies are just as low-calorie with an additional benefit.

An Australian clinical study finds that eating an ounce of chopped chili peppers every day can protect cholesterol from forming atherosclerotic plaques, and the benefit is measurable in as little as a month.

Drs. K. D. Ahuja and M. J. Ball of the University of Tasmania (Australia) found that a "freshly chopped chili" condiment eaten every day slowed the oxidation of cholesterol even more effectively than taking vitamin E and antioxidant supplements. The same researchers, along with Drs. I. K. Robertson and D. P. Geraghty, also found that eating chilies for a month lowered resting heart rate in men.

So spice up your diet and lose a few more ounces every week. Mustard and chili peppers can add taste to simple meals and help you lose fat, lose weight, and protect your heart all at the same time.

Turbulence Training Vs Fat Loss 4 Idiots - Which is Better For You?

Turbulence Training and Fat Loss 4 Idiots are two of the most popular weight loss programs on the market today. Each has thousands of people who swear by it. Yet they couldn't be anymore different. How do they differ and which is better for you?

1. Turbulence Training is a fitness oriented weight loss program while Fat Loss 4 Idiots is a nutrition based program. This means that if you can't stand the idea of working out, then Turbulence Training isn't for you and Fat Loss 4 Idiots would fit you better. However, doing a fitness oriented weight loss program has several advantages like developing your muscles as well as helping you cut fat and improving your fitness levels. Fat Loss 4 Idiots doesn't help you develop your muscles since it's based solely on proper nutrition.

2. Turbulence Training is based on short but intensive workout routines. This means that it doesn't take too much of your time to follow this program. Fat Loss 4 Idiots is similar because apart from recommended walking once in a while, you really don't need to spend any time on it. I imagine that Turbulence Training does take a little more of your time, but that's to be expected because it requires exercising.

3. Fat Loss 4 Idiots provides a faster rate of weight loss than Turbulence Training if you measure it pound for pound since with Turbulence Training you also put on some muscle mass (which actually makes you look better). If you're looking to crash diet for a special occasion, than Fat Loss 4 Idiots would probably be better for you.

4. Fat Loss 4 Idiots has no official support. The closest thing to any kind of support for this diet is what I provide to the readers of a review I wrote of this diet on Fat Loss 4 Idiots Review. Turbulence Training does have a support system, so if that's important to you, this is the one to choose.

5. Fat Loss 4 Idiots is the simpler of the 2 programs since it requires nothing more than following a given menu. Turbulence Training holds more information and does require some intelligent application, so if it's simplicity you want, Fat Loss 4 Idiots is the way to go. That doesn't mean that Turbulence Training is difficult.

Despite these differences, both of these weight loss programs are excellent. Both can get you great results. All you need to do is pick one. Don't procrastinate too long with your decision. Just pick one and start losing weight.

Diabetes - Death by Sugar All Around the World

Due in part to many reasons, the whole world, on average, is getting bigger & fatter every year. At present:

* More than 300 million adults worldwide are obese.

* Almost half of these individuals live in developed countries and as many as 23% of American adults are obese.

* Obesity results in $100 billion in healthcare costs each year in the United States.

* Obesity results in 300,000 preventable deaths each year in the United States.

* Obesity nearly doubles your chances of developing high blood pressure.

* Nearly 70 % of cardiovascular disease cases are related to obesity!

* The U.S. Surgeon General has developed a national action plan to reduce obesity.

STATISTICS PROVIDED BY:

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

The National Institute of Health

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention

The Na tional Women's Health Resource Center

A recent study from the journal Public Health reported obesity as being a greater health risk than smoking, drinking or poverty. Obesity was more closely associated with major illnesses and a poorer quality-of-life in comparison to people that smoked, drank, or lived in poverty. Researchers found that half of the people who are obese have an additional chronic condition such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes. This study was based on a telephone survey of 10,000 Americans and used only body mass index to assess obesity and overweight. Regardless, the results are cause for great concern.

You must also keep in mind that some individuals may fit into more than one category, and sometimes even all of the categories. However, the researchers stated that more people are overweight or obese than are, collectively, daily smokers, problem drinkers or living below the poverty line. Of course, being in more than one category puts your health status at an even greater disadvantage.

Obesity is a huge burden on the health care system now and will be even more so in the near future. It is a largely a preventable disease however it is a medical condition in many cases. This is very unfortunate but it is not something that should be dismissed as static. You can make a change or you can help someone make a change toward healthier living. One of the authors said the survey "demonstrates that public health officials should intensify their fight against obesity to levels that at least match the public health campaign against smoking".

Sturm, R., and K. Wells. Does obesity contribute as much to morbidity as poverty or smoking? Public Health. 115(3): 229-235, 2001.

Unfortunately, this is not a joke, and it's definitely no laughing matter. There are a large number of Internet resources for more information on either subject, such as www.diabetes.org and www.diabetesonestop.com. The newsletters from the American Diabetes Association have provided a wealth of knowledge (and many statistics and research facts in this article).

Type 2 Diabetes (T2-D) is associated with a marked impairment in the ability of the hormone insulin to stimulate glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. Most diabetic patients are obese and have high blood levels of lipids (fats) and glucose (sugar). Both of these blood levels can contribute to insulin resistance. Correct insulin is necessary for the cells of the body to pull sugar (glucose) from the blood to use as energy. Thus, it is a negative cycle (high blood glucose leads to insulin resistance and insulin resistance leads to high blood glucose!). Over the long-term, high blood glucose levels can lead to damage of the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.

Fortunately, while diabetes is serious, it is largely preventable and is also possible to control with lifestyle modifications, although it can't be "cured". Patients can learn to take care of their diabetes by decreasing their blood glucose levels through nutritional and exercise interventions and subsequent reductions in body fat. In fact, with weight loss, exercise, and better nutrition, many diabetics can greatly reduce (or eliminate) the need for medications. Any treatments should be discussed with a medical professional before changes are initiated.

However, enough optimism, it's time to look at the hard facts and the sad state of diabetes in North American (and the rest of the world).

* T2-D affects 140 million people worldwide.

* 16 million Americans have diabetes.

* Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death by disease in America.

* In America, the total annual cost of diabetes to the nation is more than $100 billion.

* ~25% of all Medicare costs are spent on people with diabetes.

* Obesity is the most important determinant of insulin resistance.

* No one is able to escape the effects of diabetes (i.e. death of family and friends; financial; health care costs; etc.).

The chance of death due to diabetes is increasing primarily due to cardiovascular disease. More depressing is the fact that the risk of death increases with lower socio-economic status, likely because these people are less educated, and due to the fact that you can buy loads of saturated fat and sugar for a couple of bucks just about anywhere. Cardiovascular disease sucks. Having been a spectator of an open-heart surgery at the foot of the operating table, it is clear that no one who has the choice would want to go through that ordeal. Imagine your chest ripped open, your heart fixed up, and your chest sewn up with wire. Bring on the morphine.

THE CHILDREN

The most disturbing issue surrounding diabetes is the impact that it is having in adolescents and in specific ethnic groups. Nowhere is it more sad or obvious as to what harm a sedentary lifestyle and a fast food nutritional intake can have on a person's health than in children. Overweight children are becoming more common, health problems are greater, and T2-D is being seen more and more at younger ages. Risk factors for overweight kids include overweight parents, high-fat diets, watching too much television, and being from poor families.

Unfortunately, overweight children often simply become overweight adults. Because it is difficult for people to lose body fat as one grows older, public health experts hope that preventing excess weight gain in children will avert health problems later in life. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that American adolescents are developing T2-D. However it is difficult to detect T2-D in children because rarely do they show symptoms (these take years to manifest). Thus, it is extremely important to initiate educational, nutritional, and physical activity programs as soon as possible at all socio-economic levels.

ETHNIC GROUPS

Overall, the number of American diabetics increased at least 33% over the 1990's and as obesity continues to increase, so will diabetes. Unfortunately, this impacts certain ethnic groups to a greater extent than others. For example, Native American Indians have a very, very high number of T2-diabetics in their communities (3 three times the national average). African Americans may have an even higher rate of diabetes (10.8% of all African Americans - 2.3 million). It is hoped that educating these peoples on nutrition and physical activity will help combat the disease.

NUTRITION

American's fat consumption has decreased over several decades from 40 % to 34 %, however the rate of obesity has risen from 12 % in 1991 to at least 23% today. This may be due in part to the vague "official" nutritional recommendations and the massive fast food industry. The general public believes in a low fat and high carbohydrate diet, however they don't know that there are both good and bad fats and good and bad carbohydrates.

In fact, some research shows that neither the total amount of fat or carbohydrate a person consumes can predict diabetes. Researchers suggest it may not be the quantity of fat or carbohydrate that you eat, but rather the quality. Improving the quality of your food intake and monitoring the quantity will help prevent against overweight and obesity.

Hu et al. (2001a) have written a tremendous paper on the role of nutrition in diabetes. They found that for carbohydrates, one should consume more low-glycemic carbohydrates and a high fiber content. In contrast, everyone should consume minimal refined flour products to prevent large increases in blood sugar and insulin after meals.

Recommended carbohydrate foods are oatmeal, whole unrefined grains, fibrous vegetables, apples, and other fibrous fruits, while breads and sugar based foods (soda, candy, etc.) should be eliminated. In diabetic individuals, a diet of low-glycemic carbohydrates can improve blood sugar control and if you are obese, you should absolutely eliminate all high-glycemic carbohydrates from your diet. In fact, a meal of high-glycemic foods does not cause people to feel full, and may lead to more eating! In summary, this relationship has been established: High-glycemic carbohydrates develop obesity, and obesity develops diabetes.

In their thorough review, Hu et al. (2001a) also found that a high intake of saturated fat and trans-fatty acids likely promote diabetes. In contrast, an increase in a person's intake of poly-unsaturated fat and Omega-3 fatty acids could help prevent diabetes. It is wise to decrease consumption of saturated fats (animal fats), margarine, butter and hydrogenated vegetable oils (i.e. the oil that french fries are cooked in). Salmeron et al. (2001) recommend decreasing your intake of trans-fatty acids (hydrogenated vegetable oils) by replacing them with non-hydrogenated polyunsaturated fatty acids will help decrease your risk of T2-D. One place to start is reducing your intake of fast food.

In replacement, everyone should try to consume more fish oils and non-hydrogenated vegetable oils (i.e. olive oil). Most of the research presented is based on association. For example, in the Netherlands, diets containing a lot of fish are associated with lower risks of diabetes. Researchers suggest that one must follow the correct diet for a long time (i.e. make it part of your lifestyle) in order to see benefits. For example, fish oils (Omega-3 fatty acids) have benefits for "cell membranes" and help insulin function properly, however this will not happen overnight just because you had a salmon steak!

Basically, a typical "Westernized" diet should be avoided. All the negatives (i.e. saturated animal fats and sugars) seem to be associated with one another (i.e. they are all found in your typical fast food meal). In reality, everyone should try to:

* Decrease animal fat (saturated fats) and hydrogenated cooking oils.

* Increase fish and flax oils (poly-unsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids) and vegetable oils.

* Decrease high-glycemic carbohydrate intake. Don't drink regular soda!

* Increase fiber from whole grains

* Increase fruit and vegetable consumption

At the 2001 ENDOCRINE SOCIETY meeting, alternative treatments of T2-D were recommended by Arsenis and Goettelman. In this study, diabetic patients reduced animal protein intake from 2-3 times a day to once every other day (vegetable protein was substituted) and stopped all consumption of plain sugars. Patients liked the new diet and the fact that they did not have to fast, take low calorie diets or receive appetite suppressants. The metabolic profile of many patients improved and it even helped some to stop using certain medications. The authors concluded that the reduction of animal protein and sugars help to improve the quality of life and metabolic profile of diabetic patients.

LIFESTYLE

In addition to diet, another contributing factor to obesity is that 60 % of Americans don't get enough activity and 25 % get NO activity. A recent study examined almost 40000 males over the age of 40 and how the amount of TV they watch relates to their T2-D risk (Hu et al., 2001a). Researchers showed that more TV was significantly associated with higher risk for diabetes and that increased physical activity is associated with less risk for diabetes.

The key point is that if people get up and moving that they may be able to decrease their risk of diabetes. This information should be applied towards youths as well. In addition, for obese people, simply losing 5-10 pounds can have a dramatic positive effect on their health!

Even inadequate sleep can have an effect on diabetes according to research from the lab of Dr. Eve Van Cauter. In a study, subjects that got restricted sleep (< 7h) for 5 nights had impaired insulin sensitivity (Mander et al., 2001). It may be due to disruption of bodily functions due to shortened sleep. Thus, one of the functions of sleep may be to assure normal blood sugar levels. That's another "Western world" lifestyle factor that may contribute to diabetes.

On a related note, "Excessive Daytime Sleepiness" (EDS) is becoming more prevalent. This condition is associated with diabetes and is considered as an important public health problem because it is a strong risk for public safety. Its prevalence is estimated to occur in 5% to 15% of the general population.

INTERVENTIONS

According to the National Institute Health, 35-40 % of adult American women and 20-24 % of adult American men are trying to lose weight at any given time. An interesting story came out of Philadelphia last month. Philly was rated the fattest city in the USA for January of 2000 and the mayor urged the city to lose weight. The city has taken the challenge and this year sits at 3rd, while Houston is now the fattest in the USA. On a whole, obesity and diabetes are more prevalent in the Southern United States!

In a study presented at the American Diabetes Association conference, diabetic patients have the greatest improvements in symptoms after following a program that combined a proper exercise and diet approach (Alpizar et al., 2001). Obesity remains the major obstacle to the achievement of satisfactory glycemic control in T2-D and often limits management of cardiovascular risk factors. After nutritional education and guidance, as well as an increase in daily physical activity, modest weight losses and improved diabetic factors were noted (Reynolds et al., 2001). Again, these stress the need for education and guidance.

If you are active, if you eat a variety of healthy foods (natural produce, lean meats, un-refined grains), and if you are of a healthy weight, than the fear of diabetes and obesity should be minimal. When asked how to avoid diabetes, Dr. Ronald Kahn said, "Stay thin! If you are not, get thin!" After all, obesity is the most important determinant of insulin resistance.

For active people of a healthy weight, it is not unrealistic to include the odd "Western" meal in your weekly schedule without causing panic. However, the consistent intake of a high-sugar, low-fiber, high-saturated fat diet, along with a daily sedentary living pattern precludes people to the awful diseases that are diabetes and obesity.
