I'm sure it's quite obvious that most people who want to lose weight want to do it in as little time as possible, people are often asking about how to lose 10 pounds fast or how to lose xxx amount of weight in 1 month or whatever other goal they have, well, this is actually quite a good thing but can be a bad thing too.

4) Walk! You can accomplish more through an implemented walking program than just about anything else. It's not limited to age and it's low impact.

5) Change your environment. Get the junk food out of your house. When you want to have a treat, go out and have a good time.

6) Many of these lists that provide tips advocate watch your portions. What nonsense. That's how you become hungry. My thought is eat as much good quality food as you wish but chew extremely well. By chewing well (until your food becomes liquid) you'll become satisfied much sooner and improve your digestion at the same time.

7) Another tip that I see all the time is to drink plenty of water. I don't buy it. Contrary to what many believe we are not plumbing systems that have to be flushed with lots of water. While it's true that too little water is dangerous it's also true that too much water is harmful.

The single most important step is to make up your mind, to focus and take action. While it may seem a little odd, you're goal is not to lose weight. Your goal is to establish your ideal weight and to implement these lifestyle changes. If you do that the weight loss will happen all by itself, when you're not looking and effortlessly.

How to Get Ripped Without Getting Ripped Off - II

4-5 Small Meals Are Better For Dropping Fat

So divide the number your came for your Basic Metabolic Rate by how many meals you will be having per day, which is usually 4-5. Dont go less than 4 or more than 6 meals per day as it tends to make the fat loss process more challenging.

We are going to divide by 5 as I have found that 5 meals per day is the optimum for most people. In this case we came up with roughly 250 calories per meal, which is the amount of calories that you need to consume per meal. For best results space your meals out ever 2.5 to 3 hours.

You can pick the ratio of fat to carbs or protein that suits you best but in my experience a 60/40 carbs to protein works for most people. Keep in mind this is a guideline as some people do even better on higher carbs or higher protein. Dont be afraid to play with the rations until you find what works best for your metabolism.

A couple of extra points

1) Every time you feel hungry drink 500 ml to 1 litre of water

2) You will feel hungry for the first couple of weeks but it will subside. Remember no one ever died from a hunger pain.

3) When you feel the sensation of hunger, dont eat, and dont call it hunger. Just go inside with the feeling and observe it without labeling the sensation. When it finally goes away (usually 5-15 minutes) youre then free to eat. This strategy helps you take back control of what I call artificial hunger due to psychological programming.

Step 3 is an extremely powerful mental technique, which allows you to go inside the hunger pain. This was taught to me by Dr. David Hawkins. Whats interesting is Dr. Hawkins was the first person ever to simplify and identify the exact process I naturally used while preparing for my competitions. I could never really explain it until I listened to his audio CD on Weight Loss. Thanks Dr. Hawkins!

Training To Get Lean

Training to get lean is simple but not always easy.

I have found that 5 weight training sessions per week with 5 cardio sessions per week works best for most people. Consistency, intensity, and a great attitude will go along ways to achieving your desired look.

I like the body part per day program with calves or abdominals trained 2-3 times per week on alternate days. Your weight training sessions will generally last between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours and the cardio should be from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Recently, there has been a trend for short intense anaerobic workouts twice a week to replace the need for 5 cardio sessions which many people find work better. The intensity of these cardio sessions is on the high end and they are not for the faint of heart but boy do they work for dropping weight fast. I will be writing more about this style of training in future articles.

The Get Ripped Conclusion

A total of 10 hours a week investment will have you losing 1-2 lbs of body fat consistently for weeks until you get your desired body fat percentage. Weight Loss: You Are What You Think!

Most of us know and have heard the phrase, You are what you eat. However, is it possible that another phrase also applies? You are what you THINK. What are you willing to do to achieve your weight loss goals?

Im approached quite regularly about which diet is best, which book would I recommend and what exercise program should a person follow. People think they can just purchase a book to read and then some sort of magic occurs whereby reading it will cause their fat to magically disappear. Well, Im here to break the news to you, the $40 investment in your weight loss book is just the start, theres a lot of hard work and other expenses involved.

Time Investment

Theres time invested in your education (reading, watching videos etc), time youll spend exercising doing both cardio and weight training. Theres time spent creating your new meal plans as well as preparation of those meals the day before or days in advance. Theres time involved in doing extra laundry because youre suddenly doing more exercising now on your weight loss journey.

Let me ask you this: Whats your favorite television show? How much television are you watching in a given week? 1 Hour? Six? Are you willing to eliminate television to allow yourself time to go to the gym and prepare foods for the next day? If not, then dont bother buying books that recommend food and exercise programs? It takes time to prepare food for 5 or 6 meals in a day and to go to the gym once or twice a day. Weight loss requires a time investment.

Cutting Expenses To Reach Your Goal

Weight Loss requires sacrifice.

Your body, your mind, your soul and becoming the best you can be is the single best investment you can make. Make the decision to eat the cleanest food you can, make the healthiest choices you can, begin to switch from non nutritional foods to nutritional foods and let go negativity in your life. You probably picked up this book because you want to lose weight as a way of looking better. But the simple fact is, your weight is more than a matter of taste or aesthetics. It's a matter of health. The medical perils of being overweight

Being over weight increases your risk for many serious medical problems. The vast majority of overweight people suffer from one or more of the following conditions: diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, gall bladder disease, and arthritis. If that isn't bad enough, obesity is the second most important factor contributing to death in the United States. (It should come as no surprise that smoking is the first.)

Diabetes

Nearly 16 million Americans have diabetes, a metabolic disorder in which the body does not make enough insulin or cannot use it effectively. About 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which is closely tied to being overweight. Each year, more than 190,000 people die from diabetes or its many complications. For people who live with diabetes, it is a frequently disabling disease.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people between 20 and 74 years of age.

It is a major cause of kidney disease, requiring dialysis or kidney transplant.

People with diabetes are as much as four times more likely than others to have heart disease or suffer a stroke.

Diabetes causes nerve damage, which may require amputation of a toe, foot, or lower leg.

In men, diabetes is a frequent cause of erectile dysfunction.

There is no cure for diabetes, and it requires lifelong management and medication. All diabetics require a controlled diet to regulate blood sugar levels, and regular checkups to detect damage to the eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. There are ways to lower the risk of developing it, however. Although type 2 diabetes tends to run in families, people who are overweight and inactive are at much greater risk of contracting the disease.

Losing weight, controlling blood cholesterol levels, and engaging in some form of regular exercise are the best ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

It's best to eat those calories throughout the day in small meals. Sure, you could blow all your calories at once on a super sized Big Mac meal and eat calorie-free food for the rest of the day but that would defeat the purpose.

When you eat regularly, in small portions, your body doesn't store fat. It knows there's food right around the corner and doesn't store fat by thinking there's a famine.

When you start paying attention to the calories you'll find that you also start learning more about nutrition too because you want to get the most nutrition for your calories. The technical term for this is Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition (CRON) and there is all kinds of research supporting the health benefits of this type of eating.

Don't worry: you'll quickly start memorizing the calories and soon it will become intuitive. You'll look at a dish and automatically know the proper size and roughly how many calories are in it. You won't have to walk around with a charge or calculator.

You will steadily lose weight until you reach your ideal weight. After you reach your ideal weight you will continue to eat the same amount of calorie in order to maintain that way. And as I know from experience, being in the position of maintaining your weight, instead of having to lose it, is a wonderful feeling.

Weight Loss - Are You Determined Enough to Succeed?

Determination separates the winners from the also-rans in almost every field. Without the strength of will to succeed, it's difficult to make the effort when you just don't feel like it.

And with the pace of modern life there are generally a lot of times when our energy is flagging and it's easier just to sit on the sofa in front of the TV and order take-away than do anything like cooking a delicious healthy meal or going out for a walk after dinner.

If you think back, you'll probably see that whenever you succeeded at anything, you were determined to achieve whatever it was you set out to do. You decided to do whatever it took and you did it.

This may even have applied to times when you lost weight in the past. You lost weight by being determined to do so, but the problem is you just put it all straight back on again unless you were equally as determined not to gain weight.

So how do you increase your determination? Or is it just something you are born with and can't change?

Your level of determination is not fixed at birth, but it does have to come from you. No one else can be determined to lose weight and keep it off on your behalf. But there ARE ways in which you can increase it.

  • Be absolutely crystal clear about what you will gain from losing weight and staying slim. Why do you want this? Think about all the reasons you want it for you and not just for others. Write down your list of reasons and review it morning, noon and night.

  • Whenever you have a spare moment visualize how you will look when you lose weight and imagine how you will move, what you will wear and, above all, how good you will feel.

  • Strengthen your belief in your ability to succeed by telling yourself often that you CAN do this. Success is up to you and you can do it. It doesn't matter what has happened in the past - you can succeed this time.

Reinforce your determination in these ways several times a day. It takes very little time and effort for something that makes so much difference. But the real trick comes with what you do next and this is a missing step in many self-help/success type processes.

Straight after you run through these little exercises to strengthen your determination, take some kind of action towards your goal. It needn't be a huge step or take much time at all. You can look for and plan healthy meals, go shopping for healthy food, get your gym kit ready, get changed into your running gear, do a few tummy squeezes, climb a flight of stairs or whatever. Just seize the moment.

This then generates momentum all of it's own. Reinforcing your determination and belief leads to successful action which leads to being more motivated and having even more belief in your success. A happy "unvicious" circle!

Try it and you'll see your determination (and with it your chances of success) soar.

Wouldnt it be nice to lose weight quickly, with minimal effort or fuss? Of cause you would! I for one would love to just sit back do nothing and the weight will just fall off.

Whether its a Low Carb, Low GI Diet, A choice of diet pills or natural weight loss pills, diet shakes, or exercise equipment, weve all seen the fantastic claims people including celebrities make about losing tons of weight AND how they can show you how to do the same thing.

I can tell you right now that 99% of these people are total frauds. You may have even fallen prey to one of these scam artists, selling you their latest weight loss program. Me too!

In the past Ive brought so many of these programs that I cant even recall how many. I dont know why, but I tend to find the good in people, and I was sold by these marketing schemes time and time again, even after being scammed by another. Finally, after so many disappointments, I got FED UP. I decided to get to the bottom of this fascination we have with Weight Loss Programs and find out if there really were any LEGITIMATE programs for Weight Loss.

The American Heart Association has several tips to that helps guide you to identify a Fad Diet or Program if it is recommended.

Magic or miracle foods that burn fat. Foods dont burn fat they create fat when we eat more than we need.

Bizarre quantities of only one food or type of food such as eating only cabbage or tomatoes. These foods are fine as part of an overall healthy diet, but eating large quantities of them could lead to unpleasant side effects.

Rigid Menus. Many diets set out a very limited selection of foods to be eaten at a specific time and day, exactly as written. Often these limited diets dont address the widely varied taste preferences of our diverse population.

Specific food combinations. Some foods taste good together, like the classic soup and sandwich, but theres no scientific evidence that eating foods in certain sequences or combinations has any medical benefit.

Rapid weight loss of more than two pounds a week.

No warning given to people with diabetes or high blood pressure to seek advice from the physician or healthcare provider. Some fad diets could raise blood pressure or blood glucose even if you loss weight.

No increase physical activity. Simple physical activities, like walking or riding a bike, are one of the most important ways to lose weight and maintain weight loss. Yet many fad diets dont emphasis these easy changes.

Now dont be discouraged, which weight loss program is the right one for you, which one isnt just a fad diet. In my research I have found a few programs that not only deal with losing weight but also the cause of why you got fat in the first place (which by the way, is ultimately the main reason why we end up putting the weight back on) and also adding in successful, simple strategies to increase exercising.

Nutrition Lies You Tell Yourself

I spent a lot of time this week designing personal nutrition programs and meeting with new clients. And everytime I do that, I have clients fill out an extensive feedback form, which includes a 3 day diet record.

Now one of the questions on the feedback form is, "Do you eat lots of fruits and vegetables?"

The most common reply: yes. And it's always a lie.

But the truth comes out pretty quickly.

When I take a look at their daily diet record, many of these clients aren't eating any vegetables at all. Not a single vegetable all day.

Listen, I guarantee you that not eating fibrous vegetables means that you are not going to reach your fat loss goals.

If you want to be lean, but don't think you need any vegetables at all to accomplish this goal, then I'd like to know what color the broccoli is in your world, because getting lean just isn't going to happen for you.

I'm serious.

You can bump up the lean protein and knock down your sugar intake, but if you aren't pumping up the greens in your diet, you're going to be frustrated with your fat loss.

Craig Ballantyne: Do you have any super foods that you think absolutely must be in everyone's diet for health and wellness purposes?

Rachel Cosgrove:

Green vegetables are a super food. I usually try to get my clients to have some kind of vegetable at breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. They can throw some spinach in their eggs, have a salad at lunch and broccoli at dinner for example.

The other super food besides green vegetables is essential fats, whether it is from foods or in supplement form everyone should be getting their Omega 3 fats. Over and over again in the research Omega 3 fats prevent all types of diseases and are truly a super food. So eat fish and green vegetables!

CB: Where should someone start if they want to take their healthy eating to the next level? (i.e. beyond just eating regular supermarket chicken and vegetables). What are some tips to eating as healthy as possible?

RC:

Get out of your rut. Too many people get stuck in a rut of eating the same thing every day. You should rotate your foods. If you eat a food today, you shouldn't eat it again for four days. This is called a rotation diet and works great for your health and for decreasing inflammation. Basically if you have chicken today, don't eat it again for four days.

This is really hard to do and I dont usually give a true rotation diet to too many people but I do emphasis variety and trying to eat different foods throughout the week.

Basically each time you go to the grocery store try to buy something different, try buffalo or ostrich meat or a different type of fish. Grab a new vegetable you have never tried.

CB: What ratio of carbohydrates, fat and protein is best for fat loss or is this something that must be approached individually?

RC:

This is individual, depending on metabolism and activity level.

Following a Low Junk Diet cuts your carbohydrates back pretty low though so I suppose if I were to recommend anything, it would be lower carbohydrate where all the carbs are from fruits and vegetables.

I would never say no carbohydrates though. You have to be careful because if you cut back too much you'll be too tired to move and then you'll burn less calories and it'll back fire on you. I also like to cycle in a higher carbohydrate day once or twice a week.

CB: What are some common Western-diet foods that cause problems such as fat gain, inflammation, food allergies, etc.?

RC:

Fast food, processed junk, sodas- again, stick to whole, natural foods. Remember "Green Faces."

(The majority of people would do well sticking to whole, natural foods. We have a nutrition plan we start people on at our gym to eliminate the junk from their diets called "Green Faces" and it consists of eating foods that are green or that had a face. That's it, nothing else.)

Allergies are usually from bombarding your body with the same foods over and over again. Most common allergies are wheat, dairy and sugar. If you are having symptoms of allergies such as post nasal drip, fatigue, bloat, gas, excess mucus, etc. try eliminating wheat, dairy and sugar and see if your symptoms disappear. It is most likely one of these foods.

CB: What are the benefits of eating organic food? How does a customer know if the food is organic?

RC:

For myself and my clients I recommend eating organic when possible.

Organic food will have lower amounts of pesticide residue. Don't let this scare you though, eat more fruits and vegetables, organic or conventional, and you'll be healthier. Just be sure to wash your produce well before eating.

I have started to see more and more organic foods in the regular grocery store which makes it easier to get. It will say "Certified Organic" on it, meaning it was grown on an organic farm. I also love to visit the local Farmers Market every week, this is a great way to get a variety of really fresh vegetables, some organic.

CB: What are the best teas for us to be drinking? Where should we buy them (commercial grocery store, real Chinese health food stores, etc.)?

RC:

Green Tea has thermogenic, anti cancer and cardio-protective properties. What better way to start off your day! Skip the coffee and have green tea. You can find organic green tea at your regular grocery store.

Water For Weight Loss

Eating the right foods is integral to losing fat, but many overlook the reality that what you drink plays an important role as well. We all have preferences when it comes to drinks. Some prefer alcohol, some detest water, and some believe that the only thing that keeps them going is cup after cup of coffee. However, there are consequences, both good and bad, depending on what you typically drink. Lets start with the most important drink, water. As early as 2003, reports were beginning to surface about how water actually elevates the metabolic rate, therefore aiding in weight loss. This study conducted at Berlins Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center studied the caloric intake and energy expenditures of seven men and seven women who were not overweight. After the test subjects each drank a little over 2 glasses of water, their metabolic rates increased by as much as 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of ingestion and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes. Researchers found that if a person increases their water intake by 1.5 liters a day without altering anything else, they would still burn an extra 17,400 calories by the end of the year. That is unbelievable. Furthermore, its also well known that water is satiating in that it helps curb hunger pangs, therefore preventing you from overeating. Obviously, water is vital for survival, but now we know that it helps to burn more calories giving us another reason as to why its necessary for fat loss.

Dairy and Weight Loss

Another study came out in 2003 that may be difficult to imagine being true, but research has arrived at the conclusion that low-fat dairy products are a wonderful means in aiding with fat loss. According to the American Society for Nutritional Sciences Journal of Nutrition, women who consumed milk, yogurt, and cheese three to four times a day lost 70% more body fat than women who didnt eat dairy. Supposedly, the reason is that calcium actually helps to boost the metabolic rate. Oddly enough, other foods fortified with calcium wont have the same weight loss effect as the dairy products. Women reap the largest benefit when they consume three servings of dairy a day and 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day. Arnold Press Guide

The Arnold Press, also known as the rotational shoulder press, isolates the deltoids with little other muscle emphasis, with exception of the triceps. Its a good idea to start out with a light weight when first attempting this exercise, until your muscles get used to the movements.

This exercise can be performed sitting or standing. It may be beneficial to perform this exercise sitting with adequate back support to reduce the chance of injury.

To begin, take a dumbbell in each hand and bring them up to your shoulders as if you had just curled them. Your back should be straight and your head should be facing straight forward. From this position you should begin rotating the arms out away from your body, while simultaneously lifting your arms up over your head. By the time you are halfway through the movement your elbows should be pointing away from your body.

At the top of the movement, the arms should be extended without locking the elbows. From this position, retaining a fluid movement, reverse the procedure and return to where the dumbbells are level with your shoulders in front of your body. Continue with the exercise until youve reached the designated rep completion for your set.
