Stubborn Weight Loss? You May Have an Appetite Disorder

Nobody would argue that obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States -- one look around confirms that. Unfortunately, many people try to lose weight -- and when it doesn't work, they think they've failed. In addition to the resulting physical and health issues, repeated diet failures take a heavy emotional toll, leaving many feeling weak, guilty, ashamed and humiliated. But it's not their fault!

When diets fail, we usually blame the person for a lack of self-control, but the reality is, their body chemistry has gone awry. Science has proven our brains and body chemistry control our appetite. Certain eating patterns can alter those chemicals and create an unconscious, internal process that may even lead to a hidden addiction to food.

There are several causes of appetite disorder but each relates to an imbalance of the brain chemicals that control eating. One of the most potent causes involves excessive neuropeptide Y (a chain of amino acids), which is triggered by skipping meals. As it builds up, it forces people to binge. Our bodies are remarkable machines. When food isn't coming in regular intervals, your body produces chemicals that make you eat more, so you'll have enough food - just in case.

Appetite disorder is also caused by stress and a lack of serotonin. We learn, sometimes very early in life, that eating specific foods in certain quantities brings relief from stress and makes us feel better. No wonder people become addicted!

So how do we go about breaking the cycle? The first step is to diagnose the specific profile. 7 chemical imbalances can cause appetite to be disordered, and unless you know which ones affect you, you could be making the wrong changes.

The 2nd step is never skip a meal - especially breakfast. The goal is to eat regularly throughout the day and reprogram the body to trust we'll feed it. This alone can naturally reduce appetite by a third!

Another way to repair body chemistry involves finding new ways to self-soothe so that we won't turn to food when we feel bad or stressed. Admittedly harder than not skipping meals, this fix takes re-training since food has become a friend. It's possible to learn a way to listen to your feelings so that they don't hurt and so that you aren't triggered to eat.

Once an appetite disorder is balanced, almost any diet can work. The key is to choose one that's a good match for your body chemistry and to adapt it to fit your recovery needs. The bottom line is that your ability to stay on a diet depends on staying in recovery from your appetite disorder.

With this video I'm not saying that most obese people are healthy because the sad truth is that many if not most are not, but the reason for that is not because they are "obese", it's because we are being brainwashed into thinking that no matter what we do, if we are fat then we are unhealthy, by the 44 billion dollar a year weight loss industry. After years of trying to lose weight and still being big many people give up on trying to eat right and being active -figuring, hey, if I eat healthy and bust my ass exercising and I still can't get "healthy" (ie no longer big) then what is the point?

We must remember that the media, advertisers, and the diet industry are selling us dissatisfaction with our bodies in order to make a profit. The obesity industries, including commercial weight-loss programs, weight-loss drug purveyors and bariatric surgery centers, make BILLIONS every year and every year their profits climb. These industries make a huge profit from training people to hate bigger bodies and to think that big automatically means unhealthy.

Many studies have proven that big people who eat right and are active are just as healthy as those who are thinner, and much more healthy than thin people who don't eat right and exercise.

Health is important. But health isn't conducive to size.

Be active, eat healthy foods, love your body and yourself, and don't let the media brainwash you into thinking that you can tell someone's health by their size.

Healthy Weight Loss Requires Motivation

Healthy weight loss is a popular goal for countless people. And today, more than ever, we are heavier than at any time in history. And even though it seems that everyone is on a diet these days, the majority never seem to understand how to lose weight and keep it off for good.

Part of this lack of understanding is due, in part, to having too much information. With all of the resources available including countless diet books, magazines and all of the information available online, knowledge is definitely not the problem. However, too much of a good thing is.

With so many sources, it's difficult to know which weight loss program to follow and who to listen to. In reality, there are a lot of good plans out there and if you happen to choose one of those it would be difficult to go wrong. If you actually manage to get to this point, program in hand, the key to success is learning what to do and then doing it. Really - it's that simple.

So many people like the idea of learning and reading about the latest and greatest diet plan but never put any of the recommendations into daily practice. They become extremely knowledgeable about weight loss and know how many calories the most popular foods contain. What they fail to do however, is make use of that information. Instead, they buy another diet book because the first one didn't work.

If implementation is the real problem, how can you beat the odds and solve it for your own situation? The answer is simple, really. Once you determine the best plan for your needs, you must find a way to constantly motivate yourself to stay on track. Because everyone is wired a bit differently, this will be a highly individual undertaking.

Some people find that having another person hold them accountable works well. They will generally confide in a friend that they are trying to lose weight and ask the friend to give a gentle reminder when it appears they have slipped up in some way. Alternatively, the friend may occasionally ask about how things are going as a subtle reminder to stay on track. The friend may even be an exercise buddy and you can hold each other accountable for fitness activities. If this strategy works for you, then use it to you and your friend's best advantage. If not, there are many other ways to stay motivated.

The most important component of a motivational tactic is that it have meaning to you. You must be able to identify with and internalize it. Ideally you'll want to find several different motivators to have in your arsenal in case one isn't working particularly well at any given moment - you can just trade it out for a new one. Develop a list of motivational tips and you'll be well on your way to a successful and healthy weight loss.

Leave the cell phone at home and don't use gym time to socialize. You need to make your workouts intense. Maybe 30 seconds between sets and 2 minutes between exercises.

The goal of your training program should be to enable you to reach your body' potential and maintain and strengthen the most essential and functional muscle groups. What we are looking for here is functional strength. This is how you get a lean muscular body one without unnecessary bulk. Hitting the weight room twice a week for an hour can help prevent or at least slow "middle-aged spread.

Once you get the right workouts down don't forget to eat right. Feeding your body with the proper nutrients will have two results. You will not be adding anymore excess fat to your belly. And you will be giving your body the energy it needs to complete the exercises necessary to lose the belly fat you have.

Weight Loss Success Stories - My Own Success Story

We read weight loss success stories in advertisements in magazines, and see the weight loss success stories on info-mercials with "results are not typical" at the bottom of the screen. It's kind of depressing sometimes.

So, I decided that I would like to share my real weight loss success story with you. My hope is that it will help motivate you on your path to weight loss, or give you the push you need to commence your own weight loss program.

For me, it all started years ago. I would diet all the time. I would see some weight come off, feel good about myself, start eating normally again and pile all the weight back on. Every diet I went on would follow this pattern. I was your classic yo-yo dieter.

A few months ago I decided enough was enough and I was going to get rid of my yo-yo habit (I kicked cigarettes years ago, so I was sure I could kick another addiction!). I commenced a new program. This program would involve eating normally. This program would not involve starvation and eventual relapse. This program would involve some exercise. I planned to not only lose weight, but become healthy. I would target weight from fat, not weight from water.

I picked up a copy of a commercially available weight loss and (more importantly) weight control program.

The essence of the program is as follows:

1. Rather than eating three meals a day, change your habits and space your meals out to six per day.

2. Do some light exercise.

There are some things you need to calculate at first and some other things you need to measure, but basically that's it!

Using this program I have managed to lose about 20 pounds in two months. I am now a shadow of my former self. Importantly, I lost this weight without going hungry. As for maintenance, there's nothing to change-- I am eating more than enough food with more than enough variety and I can have a binge when I like.

I hope this weight loss success story was motivating in some way for you and helps you find it within yourself to achieve your long-term health goals.

There's only one problem with this ad. The woman in the ad is perfectly fit and doesn't need to lose any weight at all. Though she does strip down to her underwear and that's never a bad thing in advertising.
